Who should apply

ESB is a place for people interested in deepening their knowledge of eTextiles and electronic craft. It’s a space for makers, designers, engineers, artists, storytellers, and others who have experience in electronics, textiles, craft, programming, wearable technology, or other related fields.

Electronic textiles or eTextiles embed electronics and electrical circuits into textiles using conductive fabrics, yarns, threads, and other materials through craft, fabrication, or industrial techniques. It describes an emerging hybrid practice that gives new functionality, interactions, and aesthetics to textile artifacts, often challenging the traditional ways we relate to the material world. These artifacts can live on the body, exist in our everyday interfaces, or explore new digital realms of craft-based traditions.

Applicants should meet one or more of the following criteria:

  • Display an active practice in eTextiles, electronic craft, smart textiles, or wearable technology.
  • Have an expertise in a related field including electronics, textile design, engineering, fabrication, fashion/apparel design, programming, pattern design, craft (lace making, knitting, crochet, etc), surface design, narrative design, etc.
  • Show a working knowledge of a broad range of skills related to eTextiles or electronic craft (i.e. you are not necessarily an expert, but have some experience working with eTextiles and/or eCraft).
  • Illustrate a vested interest in contributing to the fields of eTextiles and electronic craft and willingness to share what you learn with others.

Accommodation + Fees

Due to space constraints, ESB is not able to accept all applicants. Applications will undergo a selection process and selected applicants will be notified in June. If selected, participants will pay a fee of $450 to cover shared lodging, workspace, materials, tools and more. Travel to and from Prairie Ronde must be covered by participants. Dinner during the duration of the program will be provided but other meals are the responsibility of participants. All accommodations will have access to fully equipped kitchens.

We are working to secure a limited number of scholarships to support anyone who wants to join, but that may not be able to pay the required fees. We will send out more information on this as it unfolds.

This is an event built and driven by the participants. Participants are expected to come ready to pitch in and participate, whether that means to host a discussion, explain a tool, or prepare tea. We also expect everyone to treat each other with the utmost respect and seek to build a safe, inclusive community space. Please familiarize yourself with our Code of Conduct before applying.

ESB is a small organization that strives to keep the participant fee as low as possible. The participant fee is one available resource that is budgeted tightly in with other available resources at the time of organization. Because of this we are not able to refund participants after payment has been made. You can view our budget here.

Covid-19

We are preparing a COVID-19 contingency plan and reserve the right to adjust dates or other details in the event of a new or increased risk to the virus.

All participants will need to show proof of being “fully vaccinated” before attending ESB. All local and current regulations, requirements and medical suggestions with regards to masking, social distancing and vaccination will be followed.

All residents are asked to take precaution for two weeks prior to departure.  Please ensure that you are not showing ANY signs of COVID before your departure. If you are showing or having any signs of COVID prior to your departure, do not travel until you have been tested and are clear of such signs or symptoms.
